For SHIP and Medicare counselors

“Medicare will cover the nursing home, right?”

The counseling conversation usually turns on the gap between what Medicare covers after a hospital stay and what long-term care costs after that coverage ends. The state cost pages put the monthly figures for a nursing home, assisted living and home care side by side, and the Medicaid guide for the same state explains what happens when private funds run out.

What to hand a family

Links that remember where a family came from

Paste these into a resource page, a newsletter or an email. The tag on the end tells us a family arrived through your link, and nothing more: no cookie, no account, no information about the person. If you want to see how many of your families used the site, ask and we will send the count.

State fact sheets

The state fact sheet gives a counselor the medians and the Medicaid guide link on one printed page for the client to take home. Every state has one, and each prints on a single page from the browser. Pick a state.

Put a cost table on your own page

The embed gallery generates one line of code for a city cost table, a city against state against national comparison, a licensed provider count or a care type cost card. The widget updates itself when the data updates and carries one attribution link back to the source page. No registration and no tracking script.

Frequently asked questions

Do the nursing home figures distinguish Medicare-covered days from private pay?

No. The published median is a private-pay monthly figure. Medicare coverage after a qualifying hospital stay is time-limited and is described on the paying-for-care pages, not folded into the cost figure.

Are the Medicaid guides eligibility determinations?

No. They summarize each state's published rules and link to the official program pages. Only the state agency decides eligibility on an individual case.
