Paying for Memory Care
Memory care is usually priced above standard assisted living because of staffing and security. Payment paths are similar to assisted living, not hospital billing.
The basics
Medicare generally does not cover memory care room and board; Medicaid help is state-specific when a program covers dementia residential care.
Long-term care insurance may help if the policy covers assisted living / memory care and benefit triggers are met.
What memory care costs
Across the fifty states where we publish a 2025 figure, the median modeled cost of memory care is $7,788 a month. The middle half of states falls between $6,860 and $8,854. Multiplied across twelve months, that median is roughly $93,000 a year, an estimate for budgeting rather than a price any community quoted, and before any care-level surcharge on top.
One caveat we would rather state plainly than bury: our memory care figure is modeled, not surveyed. We take each state's assisted living median and apply a documented premium band, because no free state-level survey publishes memory care separately. So the gap you see against the $6,230 assisted living median, about $1,558 a month, is the model's assumption rather than an independent measurement. The method is on our methodology page.
Used the right way, the figure is for budgeting and for comparing one state against another. For a specific community, ask for its own price sheet, and ask what triggers a move to a higher care tier.
