Ohio Medicaid for Long-Term Care
Ohio Medicaid can help pay for long-term care if your parent meets Ohio's medical and financial rules. But coverage for nursing homes, assisted living, and in-home help is not the same in every state. Start with the official Ohio Department of Medicaid site and Medicaid.gov, not third-party summaries. It is not medical or legal advice. We leave dollar limits blank until a primary source is cited.
What is Ohio Medicaid?
Ohio Medicaid is Ohio's Medicaid program. Medicaid is a joint federal–state program, and states set many eligibility details within federal rules.
For long-term care, families usually care about three pathways: nursing facility coverage, HCBS/waivers that support care at home or in the community, and whether any state Medicaid program helps with assisted living costs.

Does Medicaid pay for a nursing home in this state?
Medicaid nursing facility coverage is available when someone meets the state's level-of-care and financial eligibility rules. Income and asset tests are state-specific.
CMS reports that for 2026 the SSI federal benefit rate is $994 per month for an individual, and many states adopt a special income level for institutional eligibility capped at 300 percent of that rate ($2,982 per month). Confirm whether OH uses that pathway and the current countable income and asset thresholds on Medicaid.gov: https://www.medicaid.gov/.
Treat third-party limit tables as unverified. Confirm case-specific dollar amounts with Medicaid.gov or an elder-law attorney.
Home care, waivers, and assisted living
OH primary elderly or disabled HCBS / managed LTSS pathway we cite is PASSPORT. Official program page: https://aging.ohio.gov/passport.
Medicare generally does not cover assisted living room and board, so families often pay privately unless a state Medicaid waiver or state plan option helps with residential care. Availability is limited and wait lists are common. We will not invent wait-list lengths or monthly caps here.
Confirm current openings and any additional waivers on Medicaid.gov and the Medicaid.gov waiver factsheet for OH.
Medicare vs Medicaid (quick check)
Medicare generally does not pay for custodial long-term care (ongoing help with daily activities in a nursing home or assisted living). It may cover short skilled nursing facility stays after a qualifying hospital stay under Medicare rules.
If your parent needs long-term custodial care and has limited resources, Medicaid is usually the program to evaluate. Not Medicare alone.

Start at Ohio Department of Medicaid: https://medicaid.ohio.gov/
Also keep Medicaid.gov open for federal definitions of LTSS and HCBS so you can recognize when a blog post is oversimplifying.
Bring a simple packet: photo ID, Social Security number, income proof, bank statements, deed/lease if relevant, and a medication list. Requirements vary. Follow the state's checklist.
